The suspect, Apostle Joel Amenu, is alleged to have duped these people on the pretext of giving them soft loans for their businesses and offering them opportunities to acquire vehicles on hire purchase.

Most of his victims, which included market women, artisans at Kokompe, parents and hotel operators, thronged to the police station to lodge complaints against him when it emerged that he had been arrested.

Apostle Amenu is also said to have promised to offer scholarships to the children of some of his victims.

He allegedly collected GH¢150 each from a number of parents as scholarship processing fees and issued dud cheques to schools to cover the school fees of beneficiaries.

Police said the Apostle also operated a non-governmental organisation - the Mary Ekem Foundation – with his girlfriend, Lady Mary Ekem, where they were allegedly using the names of the former president, John Mahama, and President Nana Akufo-Addo to enhance the reputation and credibility of the NGO.

The Takoradi District Police Commander, Mr Peter Ofori Donkor has told the Daily Graphic that the suspect was currently in the custody of the police, as victims continue to lodge complaints at the police station.
